Windows XP Professional Media Player Ver 9 - MP3 problems

I am running Windows XP professional and have jusytupgarded to Media player 9 and now cannot configure it to save music files as MP3 only three types of WMA. When I upgraded at work (same windows XP) I had choice of three types pof WMA plus MP3....can you help explian why and tell me how to solve it as I would like to save some files as MP3 format to mt iRiver MP3 player
