windows XP product activation error after upgrading Hard disk

Ron

My old drive was failing (had error codes of imminent
failure but was still working) so I installed another
drive as a slave drive and used the Maxtor install
software to transfer the operating system and drive
contents onto the new drive. Thereafter,I re-assigned the
new drive as master. Redid the IDE cables and jumpers.

Bios recognizes new drive. But upon booting,it starts with
the windows XP logo momentarily and then I get a Windows
Product Activation Error saying: "a problem is preventing
windows from accurately checking the license for this
computer. Error code: 0X80090006"

So I never am able to complete the full boot into windows.
Guess the new HD is throwing the PID identifier off. But
it is the same computer. No help on the Compaq web site
nor on MS website that I can find.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ron

Try a Repair Installation.

Make sure you have your valid WindowsXP key
Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD
At the second R=Repair option, press the R key
This will start the repair
Eventually you will be prompted for your XP key

If you only have a System Restore CD Set from Compaq, then use the restore
CD Set to reconfigure XP - at factory state - onto the new HDD. Before you
do this, partition the new HDD: use the Maxtor software, make the primary
aprtition as much as you want, but leave 20Gb for the second.

Use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard [FAST] off the XP System on the old
HDD and save the file to the small partition of the new HDD.

Now Restore the system to the new HDD primary partition.

Run FAST to import the file from the second partition.

Install other applications not on the new HDD system partition.

Follow up question. Since I only have a restore CD, is
there any way NOT to have to go through this full restore
to factory conditions again? But I do have a MS sticker
that has the Key information for XP.

I already have done the full CD restore on the orignal
hard drive thinking that would help. It did not. And after
you do the Factory restore you still have to do all the
windows and security patches and updates. That entire
process therefore takes a FEW HOURS. And I have already
put in several hours in trying to work this out.

I have done a few new hard drive updates before without
running into this product activation problem. But this is
the first HD update with a windows XP system. Is this a
new twist with XP??

Is there any way to work around this without Restoring the
whole HD again to factory specs and updating endless
security patches and updates thereafter??? This is
inconsiderate of MS to put ordinary folks through all this
hassle.

Thanks, Ron

Hello Ron,
It appears that your drive letter is not correct so the OS cannot load all
the files that it needs to start correctly.
You added the new drive while inside Windows, so the new drive was assigned
a new drive letter which was associated with the guid on the drive in the
registry
Then you copied the old system to the new drive. The registry has the
entries for the drive guid guid which are indicating this is a different
drive letter than C: which is the way Windows was installed on the old
drive. Since Windows is expecting to be on Drive C and it;s not it cannot
load properly. WPA just happens to be the messenger in this case. Not all
the files are loaded that it needs so it fails and displays an error
message.
check out this article that talks about changing the drive letter
