Windows Xp (pro) startup problem

Well... My problems started last week with frequent BSODs.
Every time I got the login screen, but after loggin in (in
about 99% of the times) -> BSOD (0x0000008E). Strangely
enough the time the BSOD came was always the same! I.e. If
I logged in immediately when I could, I got my desktop and
crashed about 15 seconds after that. If I waited for 5
seconds before logging in then the crash came after 10
seconds and if I waited longer than 15 seconds, my PC
crashed immediately when I pressed the login button.
Anyway, after tinkering a bit, I no longer get the BSOD,
but my PC just gets stuck after that 15 seconds...

Now, if I go to msconfig and change the startup
to 'Diagnostic startup' the same thing still happens, but
it happens immediately when loggin in. As a matter of
fact, if I select the 'Normal startup' and remove couple
of startup items the delay before my PC gets stuck gets
shorter, so it seems that the problem is something it does
after the startup actions.

Now, help from msconfig says four things that might be a
problem:
1) Corrupted system file. Run System File Checker
2) Corrupted registry. Refer to Registry Scan
3) Virus
4) Upgrade from previous windows failed
And my responses to these:
1) When running SFC in safe mode I only manage to get
error saying that RPC service is unavailable.
2) No other help files even refer to any registry scan!
3) Clean on viruses when last time managed to log in! No
idea now since my scanner does not work in safe mode. (And
couple of other I've tried won't even install in safe
mode.) DOS mode worm checker from f-secure doesn't find
anything.
4) Nope. Full install on empty HD which has worked
perfectly for an year now.

Oh, and event viewer doesn't seem to contain anything
relevant to this. Except the dumps when BSODs still
occurred, but no other errors at the boot time...

So, any ideas? Or shall I back-up about 100GB of data
(please no!), wipe the disk and reinstall? There is an
unreleased (?) hotfix for that 8E BSOD (article 827663),
is this still the same problem?

0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn't
catch. These are nearly always hardware compability issues (which sometimes
means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).
a.. "STOP 0x0000008e" Error Message During Windows XP Setup {KB 315335}
Win XP
b.. Games: "Stop" Error Message That References Nv4_disp.dll {KB 325730}
Flight Simulator, other games (wth Nvidia-based video adapter

Nope.
a) Not setup, and been running 5 hours of memory testing
with no errors.
b) I've got ATI's display adapter, not nVidia's.

Any other possibilities?
