I suspect that what you have is an OEM copy of XP that is tied to a Dell
Bios and you are trying to install on a non-Dell machine, in which case, you
can't.

If you are referring to a Dell issued Product Key, it will only
work with a Dell issued installation CD. And it will
only work with the Dell computer it came with.

Call This Number to Activate: Explain your problem,
Be nice ,but forceful. Don't take any crap. Ask for a
supervisor if you have a problem. Ask for their name.
Remember it's their Activation scheme, not your's, you
paid now it's up too them.

Call , 888-352-7140 and explain the situation.

sure you can>

"Successfully implemented, SLP uses information stored in
an OEM PC's BIOS to protect the installation from casual
piracy. No communication by the end customer to Microsoft
is required and no hardware hash is created or necessary.
At boot, Windows XP compares the PC's BIOS to the SLP
information. If it matches, no activation is required.

Every single piece of hardware could be changed on a PC
with SLP and no reactivation would be required - even the
motherboard could be replaced as long as the replacement
motherboard was original equipment manufactured by the
OEM and retained the proper BIOS. In the unlikely
scenario that the BIOS information does not match, the PC
would need to be activated within 30 days by contacting
the Microsoft activation center via the Internet or
telephone call - just as in a retail scenario."

Greetings --

Are you installing it on the Dell computer for which it was
designed? Did the Product Key come with that specific CD?
