I have a notebook with a genuine windows XP sticker on the bottom, it says:

Windows® XP Professional 1-2CPU
DELL

However my defaul windows-xp professional cd does not accept the key. Which
version should I use with this key? (which language, is there difference in
OEM and Retail cd's or does DELL use other keys? )

Yes, there is a difference between OEM and retail CDs. If you are trying to
reinstall Windows, it is best to use a Dell CD on a Dell computer. If you
lost yours, contact Dell. Otherwise, you can use a generic OEM
(non-branded) OEM install disk.

You would use the Dell Recovery or OEM installation CD that originally
came with the computer.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD/license
(OEM, Volume, retail, or full) with which they are purchased. For
example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any retail version
of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice versa. An OEM
Product Key will not work to install a retail product. An Italian
Product Key will not work with an English CD. Bottom line: Product Keys
and CD/license types cannot usually (it's been reported that the Product
Key for a full license will work with an Upgrade CD) be mixed & matched.
