SweetsRecently my Windows XP Pro has started restarting automatically. But
it does this only once and then works OK. Sometimes I get the message that
"Windows has recovered from a serious error" but I never get a blue death
screen. Tried restoring it to several restore points up to a week ago but I
get the message that no changes have been made to the computer.

Any suggestions?

And while I remember it, when I either shut down or restart Windows I get a
normal looking screen but with the task bar at the bottom showing several
programs as though actually running when in fact they are not. This
phenomenon probably points out to the occasion when I might have
accidentally shut down Windows while those programs were actually running
without me shutting off those programs first. Could such a shut-down have
caused the problem and if so how can I correct this fault?

In my original message starts with SweetsRecently. Sorry about the word
Sweets creeping in. It should of course have started with "Recently my
Windows XP Pro has started restarting automatically..."

I've corrected the quote from my original message which appears below...
