Windows XP Pro Bootup Problem

Hi,

I've been having trouble booting into Windows XP Pro after a format.
This problem is very random, in that, I have been at various stages of
reinstalling all of the software in my computer and it will, for
example, hang at the black Windows XP startup screen with the progress
bar. Sometimes, it will boot perfectly, other times, it will take 2
minutes and start okay, and other times, it will not boot at all and
just hang at the startup screen. The times that it will not boot at
all, I have recognized that after a restart, my hard drive will not be
recognized within the BIOS. Although, if I perform a cold reboot, the
hard drive will become recognized once again, but I will not be able to
boot into Windows XP in any form, unless I enter safe mode.

I had at first used the hard drive, unformatted, with my hardware
listed below with no problem (it had been setup with my old computer).
I have tried swapping various components to try and rectify the
problem, but to no avail. My initial thinking is that there may be a
bad sector on the hard drive, but I doubt this, as it has worked fine
prior to this.

Here are the specs of my computer, if that helps at all. This was
built by me:

ASUS P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe Motherboard
Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz Processor
Dual 512mb NVIDIA 7600gt Video Cards
OCZ DDR2 667MHz (2 x 512mb) RAM
500W Thermaltake PSU
200gb SATA Maxtor HD

Thanks in advance for the help.
