i got a error message that the ntoskrnl.exe file is missing. i am trying to
copy it of of the setup cd using the recovery console. i keep getting an
access is denied message because it is a read only file.
what is the proper way to change the attribute using the command prompt and
do i need to change the i386 directory or just the file?
any help will be greatly appreciated

This article has step by step directions for replacing that file. It also
includes some information about other causes for that error message
appearing: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477/en-us
