Install unable to copy files during upgrade

I've been going bananas trying to upgrade 2000Pro to XP Pro SP2.
Comes a point in the install where I get error message "setup cannot copy
the file CMPROPS/dl_" and this is followed by the same message to a huge
number of other files from i386.
I have copied the i386 directory from the CD to the HD and checked size and
number of files and they match.
Setup will not copy the files from the HD either.
Same results whether I try the upgrade from within 2000 or boot from the
install CD.
I assume that some of the many live updates to 2000 have changed some files
which the upgrade tries to use but I'm not sure.

Forget the upgrade, simply install xp cd,boot to cd,select install xp,delete
the
partition (2000),create one, then let xp format & install auto...Also,set BIOS
to cd 1st priority,hd 2nd for installation..

Thanks Andrew but if you mean to do a 'clean' or new install then that is
what I have been trying to avoid as I want to carry over the 2000 programs
and settings with data. I have a lot of legacy stuff that I don't want to
have to reinstall hence the desire to upgrade. (I've moved house twice since
originally installing 2000 and I'm not sure where some of the original
software CDs are - probably among various boxes in the attic)
