I have two computers at home and have a router set up to
share broadband connection. Well, the 2 computers used to
be able to share files and a printer connected to one of
the computers. I installed XP Pro on one and the file and
print sharing is no longer capable. is there a file
needed to be installed on the computer running 98?

Check the 98 network settings.
It's possible that it uses Netbeui, while
(by default) XP does not.
XP use Netbios over TCP. This option is
available in 98. Generally it involves unininstalling
Netbeui and activating Netbios over TCP so the two machines
protocols match.
