Windows XP Pro and locales (languages)

Hi,

If a PC is running Windows XP Pro and everything (GUI, interface, menus,
etc.) is in French, is it possible to change this to English for a
particular user? Something like customizing locales on a user by user basis.

Ouch! And all this while I was under the (mistaken) impression that MS
Windows XP was built in a modular fashion regarding the regional and
language settins: just choose a locale and lo and behold you have all
GUI in your language (if you have already installed the language during
XP installation).

English can be changed to french (or any language) but not vice versa. The files for this are only available if purchased with a new computer with XP or for large coporate customers.

support? Have multiple computers at their desks(one for each language),
install different language versions on one or more hard disks or use a
different OS which does have multilingual support?

What can be done is to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP
in the language version you desire and install it on a separate drive
or partition. Windows XP will automatically create a dual-boot loader
so you can easily boot into the language version you desire.

If you wish to create new partition for installing Windows XP,
you can perform this easily with Partition Magic 8.

I was doing a bit of research on google and arrived at the same
conclusion. Thanks for your suggestion though.

But this option would cost us too much with the cost not justifying the
gain (the general belief is we are paying a full price of Windows XP Pro
just for a different language interface!).

We have instead decided to go for open source solution: Linux. It has
internationalization with sufficient customization on a user to user
basis and is free (suggestions include Ubuntu and Fedora Core 4).

Does that include obtaining a Windows XP Home with a new machine and

No, you would need to purchase a full version of XP in whatever language
you desired and then do a format/clean install.
