Language Version

Hi guys
I think I know the answer gleaned from other threads but just to confirm, It
is not possible to change Windows XP (professional) language from English to
French, is it? Country setting simply sets it up for the keyboard layout but
not menu text, help screens etc. Can somebody confirm?

What I can't figure out though is why when I try to download the French
language version IE7 to overwrite the existing, the install program refuses
to install coming up with the message to the effect "wrong language operating
system". French Mozilla installed ok though. Would it make any difference if
I un-installed IE7 first before attempting to download the French version?

Thanks

You have to install the French edition. You cannot convert an English
edition to French.

A1. Yes, it is not possible. If you want Windows in French, you must
install a French-language version of WinXP.

A2. It is possible to download and install the French-language version of
IE7 on an English-language version of WinXP. However, when you install a
Cumulative Update for IE, be it via Automatic Updates or Windows Update
website, you will "automagically" end up with an updated English-language
version of IE7.

That being said, all is not lost: There /is/ an MUI for the English-language
(only) version of IE7:

<QP>
Windows Internet Explorer 7 MUI Pack for Windows XP SP2...is a set of
language-specific resource files that may be added to the English version of
Windows with the OS MUI pack and Internet Explorer 7 installed. The Internet
Explorer 7 MUI lets the browser user interface (UI) language to be changed
to any of the supported languages according to the preferences of individual
users...Internet Explorer 7 MUI allows the user interface language of the
browser to be changed to one of the following supported languages: Arabic,
Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech,
Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian,
Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Latvian, Norwegian, Polish,
Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian,
Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish.

Correct.

What's so hard to understand about that error message? It seems
perfectly clear to me. The language version of IE *must* match the
language of the OS; it's perfectly straight-forward.

French Mozilla installed ok though.

Mozilla doesn't have to be integrated into the OS, as IE does.

Would it make any difference if
I un-installed IE7 first before attempting to download the French version?

No.
