Windows XP operating system on Drive D

When C drive failed I installed XP onto a D Drive (smaller second internal
hard drive.) System now boots to D drive and C drive is used for data storage
only. Question - when I statup my computer- it still opens a screen asking
which of the XP installations I want to boot to even though there is only one
on the computer (now on the D drive). How do I eliminate this message?

Two ways.

1/ Remove the entry from the boot ini file. That will mean editing the boot
up file by going to Control panel, click the system icon. In system
properties click the advanced tab. In advanced tab look the startup and
recovery section and click the settings button. At the next screen click the
edit button. The windows boot.ini file will now open in windows notepad.
Before you start editing you might like to create a backup copy by clicking
File on the main toolbar and selecting Save As. Save the file as
boot.inibak. It would also be a good idea to save this file to a floppy disk
or usb memory stick.

2/ An alternative, and maybe for you, less troublesome, would be to simply
adjust the time the display menu is listed to 0 (zero). This way windows
will boot without the boot menu. Follow the instuctions above until you get
to the startup and recovery window (this is where i have instructed you to
press the edit button). Instead of pressing the edit button look for the
'time to display list of operating systems' At the right hand side you will
see a box with 30 seonds in it. Change this to 0 (zero). However, do make
sure that the default operating system dialogue box contains the correct
operating system you wish to boot to. If the correct version is first on
your menu when you boot up then this is the one that will be set as default.
If it is the second on your menu you will have to change the default
operating system option to the relevant one. After making the changes click
OK followed by OK again. When you reboot you should boot straight into
Windows without any menu.
