Windows XP opens with wrong program from Start Menu, etc.

Window launches program ACDSee. I do not mean a file type is registered to
this application, I mean this program is launched when starting programs from
the Start menu, desktop, RUN, Program list etc. In other words, I cannot run
the XP System Restore program because ACDSee is started instead.

This occurred when I attempted to fix a simple program in my start menu that
was pointing to the wrong path/directory. And, programs already loaded into
memory continue to work - programs launched at startup for example. Has my
PC been hijacked? I've scanned for viruses using McAfee and run a spyware
program.

When 'right clicking' on any application, the menu has "open with ACDSee".

MKutach,

Click Start/Run and type command
Type REGEDIT

Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell

What are the sub-keys listed there?
What's the (default) set in the right pane?

Cannot run EXE files [Programs don't open]:
