WINDOWS XP NOT STARTING

Hi, I was using my computer and everything was working fine. I have Windows
XP Professional Edition w/ Service Pack 2. I also have 2 hard drives, 150 GB
and 250 GB. I have an ATI graphics driver that allows me to watch TV on my
computer. I was watching TV and recording a program...and I was tranferring a
file from on drive to the other to have enough space on my current drive to
record a program. ATI recordings tend to take up GB's of space for recording
shows. Anyways.....I had about 2 GB of space left on my current active drive
and my computer froze right before the file transfer to the other drive
completed, and the recording had stopped, but the TV was still working. No
folders were opening, so I retsrated the computer. To my dismay, when the
computer restarted, no folders were opening, so I restarted the computer
again........here's the problem.......

My computer won't go past the Windows XP starrtup screen. It just sort of
freezes and won't go any farther. I tried running Windows in SAFE MODE and it
works, but I can't really do anything. I managed to move a file from one
drive to the other, giving me 4 GB of space on my current active drive. I've
restarted the computer several times, used SYSTEM RESTORE to the day before,
but nothing is working. I'm currently running my Norton Antivirus software
doing a full system scan. (I ran a full system scan last night as well).

SO, I don't know what the problem could possibly be. Is there a way I can
start windows normally? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I've
tried waiting out the freeze screen....i waited multiple periods of 5
minutes........I even waited for a 20 minute interval. Please help

best thing would be to repair your xp..................put your xp disk in
and boot up..when u get to the installation screen..click repair windows
xp...click enter...xp will now repair itself of any damaged files from the
disk....u will not lose any files as well which is a good thing...

i put my installation disk in. I had to push R to run system recovery.
however, this is all very confusing. it sounded much simpler in your post. it
had me choose one of my drives to log onto and enter my administration
password......then i had to choose commands. one of the options under HELP
was BOOTDISK....then it asks: "are you sure you want to write a new
bootsector to the partition C?" I don't want to take chances of losing ANY
data.......i don't know what to do.

I MISTYPED......it wasn't system recovery.......it was the other option on
the blue installation startup screen besides installing windows (which i
don't want to do!)

have u got "SP2" INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER? if u have and ur disk is SP1
U will get conflicts...you will need a disk that has SP2 installed with it..u
should get an option that says "repair"....why it is asking for a new
bootsector i dont know...i have done it a few times myself and all i have
ever done is click "repair windows xp"

My Installation CD has Service Pack 2 included. There is nothing else I can
do. The only option is to push R for Repairing. Then I only have the options
to choose drive C or D. Then I have to enter my password.....then it gives
blank lines of C:/ where I have to type a command. only other option is to
EXIT.

You hit the wrong "r" at the wrong time. Read:

thats what it will do...it will re-install windows but leave all your
exsisting files intact....it looks like its starting from scratch but all it
is doing is rebuilding windows..
do this
boot from winxp disk
on the first screen press enter
then it will ask u to press f8 to accept agreement press f8
on the next screen press R for repair
it will then auto run and re-install but save all your files

Here is the advice i've received thus far:

on the next screen press R for repair

The link's suggestions weren't successful. I'm afraid to just choose to
INSTALL at the XP CD start screen because in the above link it says it's
possible you'll lose certain files in my documents and other folders. I don't
want to risk losing ANYTHING. Also, I can't burn or backup anything because
SAFE MODE does not allow such high maintenance tasks to be run or performed.

There has to be some easier way.....I can enter my desktop through
SAFEMODE.......is there anything I can do from SAFEMODE to get things going
right?

THe problem i'm having is that the black screen with the WINDOWS XP logo
appeare (startup screen).......and as the blue bar is scrolling it eventually
freezes, so I assume there is a problem loading everything. Is there a way to
fix this without going through all the tedious WIN XP install disks and
command prompts and whatnot?

I APPRECIATE ANY HELP!

It still isn't working...

Could you be a little more vague?

What's not working? When does it stop working? Did you print out the
Repair Install instructions and follow them?

NOTHING IS WORKING. MY SYSTEM ISN'T WORKING. It's very frustrating. I
printed out the Repair Install instructions and followed them......no luck. I
tried one last thing on the page...

One more suggestion from MVP Alex Nichol

"Reboot, this time taking the immediate R option, and if the CD letter is
say K: give these commands

copy K:\i386\ntldr C:\
copy K:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\

(two other files needed - just in case)

1. Type: attrib -h -r -s C:\boot.ini del C:\boot.ini

2. Type: BootCfg /Rebuild

which will get rid of any damaged boot.ini, search the disk for systems and
make a new one. This might even result in a damaged windows reappearing; but
gives another chance of getting at the repair"
---------------------------------------------------------
I did the Bootcfg /rebuild in the screen that i spoke of earlier....through
the XP INSTALL CD.....by typing R to load the Recovery Console, which took me
to the option to be able to type bootcfg and a million other possibilities.
When i did bootcgf/rebuild..... it scanned something and gave me options of
yes/no/all for load options for C: and D:.......I put ?? for both because I
had no idea what to put.......i then exited and restarted my
computer.........it seemed as though it was passing the STARTUP screen and
suddenly I got a screen showing the name for C: ?? and the name for D:
??........and I had to choose one.......I chose the ?? for C (my main
drive).......then i got the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! It told me a message about
a bad image checksum........the same message I got last time i had a
problem........which led to me having to buy a new hard drive and resintall
windows xp pro! I hope i don't have to do this all again!

so i rebooted and went back to the WIN XP INSTALL CD......
I went all the way to bootcfg again and chose an option of bootcfg /list
which lists my entries in the boot list........this is where i'm at right
now........and am worrying on what I can do to fix this mess:

----------------------
Total entries in boot list: 3

[1] ""
OS Load Options: ??
OS Location: D:\WINDOWS

[2] ""
OS Load Options: ??
OS Location: C:\WINDOWS

[3]"Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
OS Load Options: /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
OS Location: C:\WINDOWS

Mike
get hold of a copy of Knoppix [bootable Linux], it will let you burn
your files to CD, when you are happy that all your files are
safe, relax and do the repair installation.
