window folder size is 44Gb's

To the Microsoft support team, or anybody,
I have a HP DV1000 laptop that I bought from Staples office supply. When I
bought it had service pack 1 on it. Over the years it has updated and
upgraded automatically. It recently upgrade to service pack 3. It has a 1.5
Gb processor, 100 Gb hardrive, and 1 Gb of ram memory.


Recently, I found that I have only 23 Gb's of free space on the hardrive. I
started cleaning my documents but barely made a dent in freeing up space.
After studying everything on my hardrive I find that the windows folder has
44 Gb in the windows file. I look at a friends XP computer and the windows
folder is only 4.2 Gb's in the windows folder. My windows folder is ten times
larger in size. WHY?
My hardrive is 100 Gb drive, 92 Gb for storage. I have 27 Gb of programs, 23
Gb of free space and 44 Gb's for window.

I need to determine why the windows folder is ten times larger than other
computers with windows XP. How can I clean out the unneeded files? In
addition, can I clean up the drive without doing a restore of the computer
and starting over?

How do I know some hacker is not taking up space on my hardrive to use my
computer?
I have had some weird thing happening in yahoo IM.

Have you ever run the disk cleanup program? If you haven't, then the
\windows\temp folder could contain lots and lots of files.
You can safely delete all files with the tmp extension. You can safely
delete restore points. Every thing else should be attacked with extreme
caution.

As for your second question, you don't know that some hacker is not using
your system as a network storage location. Which AV program are you using?

In Windows explorer,
enable viewing hidden and system files

then go to "search"

and manually enter your Windows folder where it says "look in"

(Usually C:\Windows)

then

view===> arrange icons by size

something should turn up

it is 44 Gb which is 29000 plus files and 2941 folders all from microsoft
update most likely. they are not temp file. what size should the windows
XP windows folder be normally mine is ten times that. there are a lot of
compressed files also.

the Windows updates folders should be no where near 44 gigs
maybe half a gig or so would be normal

Mine's a paltry 4.75GB with 23,658 files. I suspect you have only one or two
files that are humongous.

The files listed as updates will normally be kept unless you delete them
but cannot account for the huge size


The setup folders , which should be deleted automatically could account for
a lot of space
if the cleanup failed, but they would probably not be in your Windows folder

and they would have *vey* long names and random looking names

such as

C:\amsnnggkkk47788lslfflghghhhjmmcxx

AV = Anti Virus.
Time Warner is an ISP. Wireless is a method for connecting computers.
If you do not have any AV program running, you are at considerable risk for
malware. Malware frequently does strange things to the windows folder.

You need to find out the names and sizes of the large files in the windows
folder.

Try running ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

There is a temp folder in the windows folder, I've seen virus activity
in the temp folder or a build up of files.
If you haven't done it already run anti virus and malware scans.

Yeah, we got that, but what the poeple on here are trying to do is get
you to actually look in the windows folders and find the large files
that are likely there somewhere.

One of the other posters on here recommended Sequiaview which is a good
program that will show you graphically the sizes of files and folders on
your drives so you can narrow down your search for what is taking up so
much space.

Once you post back with details about what large files there may be we
can help you determine where they're coming from
