Windows XP Network Problem Solver-- A Place to Start for SP2 NetworkProblems

This looks like a good place to start to solve XP network problems and perhaps those
specific to SP2 <http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm>. Just getting warmed up to it.

Having said that I have one immediate question in the section "Workgroup Not
Accessible", pp 15-16. Step 2 asks to check wehter NetBIOS is enabled. How does one
do that? Goint to Ctrl Panel->Network Connections, etc. didn't do it.

In Network Connections, right click on the icon for your LAN
connection. In the Lan Properties page highlight Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP). See the Properties button, click on it. On the
General Page click on Advanced. Click on the WINS tab. Down the
bottom, you'll see Netbios settings. You should be fine leaving
this set to Default.

Thanks. It is set to default. According to the trouble shooting instruction #2 it
should be set on, however.

That would be if you're having problems accessing PC's on a LAN
using their computer names. All machines in a workgroup can be
identified by their Netbios name. If everything's working OK,
don't mess with success. Leave it set to default.

Well, I tried enabling it just to see the effect. None as far as I can tell, so I
returned it to the default. However, everything isn't working OK. After installing
SP2 on XP pro, I can't see my other two machines or this machine from Network Places.
The document I referred to in the URL offers some hope that I may yet fix this,
but, at this stage I think using SP2 is close to a disaster. More on this in my next
post.
