Windows XP loops !

K

Kalyanaraman S.

I have a silly question (in fact, all my questions so far have been silly!!)

while working on a system with Windows XP Professional, the power went off
and the system shut off. on restarting, it displays the POST screen (with
CMOS error) and correction of the problem, displays a screen with options to
start windows under "safe mode", "safe mode with network", "safe mode with
command prompt", "with last known configuration" and "windows normal".

Irrespective of the options I choose, the "Windows XP" start up screen is
displayed and the system loops back to the POST screen. every option producs
the same result.

I would assume that re-installation of Windows XP would solve the issue, but
I find it quite time consuming and tedious (with the need to instal all the
programs and updates ).

is there a smarter method of resolving the issue?

your help is greatly appreciated.

Ehlo Kalyanaraman S.,
First and foremost, when XP starts and you get the menu asking you which
mode to start XP in, press F8 in order to display full meny.

There, choose "Disable automatic restart on system failure". Next, choose
your operating system (you will probably have only one) and the system will
start. During the bootup, you are likely to get blue screen with white letters.
What we are looking for is two things:
a) almost at the very top of the window you will get an error, it will be
in all capitals and instead of spaces you will get "_"'. We need that, if
you have any.
b) at the mid-screen, you will see the word "STOP" and then numbers. We need
those as well.

Post them here, so we can understand what exactly is the issue.

Singapore Computer Service

Hello,

You mention that the BIOS got reset. Did you set the hard drives to be
running in the correct mode? (e.g. AHCI, IDE, Enhanced IDE, etc) In you are
unsure, perform the below to get the error code

Switch on your computer and keep hitting F8 until you get a menu titled
"Windows Advanced Options Menu". If you see the XP loading progress bar, you
missed it and will have to try rebooting again.

If there is only one option in that menu, hit F8 again.

In this menu select 'Disable automatic restart on system failure', Enter,
Enter and you should be able to view the full blue screen error when it
occurs again. Post back the message here and we will be able to help you
better

Note: If there is no 'disable automatic restart..' option, select 'Start
Windows Normally' and *quickly* hit the F8 key for the correct menu to come
out

Thank you for your response (and also that of Jonathan, above).

I did what you have asked me to do and here is the information (ad verbatim):

quote

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

unquote

thanks, in advance, for your help.

I tried this method, but there was never an option to create a Recover
Console, so I have ended up re-installing the operating system, which has led
to another proble. i am posting that problem separately!
