Hi

I had installed tweakUI power toy and changed the option "Logon -> Unead
Mail -> Consider Mail abandoned after" from 3 days to 1 day. Ever since I did
that Windows XP has stopped displaying unread mails and running programs on
the login screen. I tried uninstalling tweakUI and also checked the registry
for permissions but they all look fine and I am still facing the problem.

What should I do?

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

First, uninstalling TweakUI does not undo any changes you made with it.
Anything done with TweakUI is changed in the registry.

MessageExpiryDays in either one of these keys, depending on if you applied
it all users or a specific user...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

MessageExpiryDays set to 0 disables Show unread mail on Welcome screen.
Any other number will display the number of unread messages for that many
days.
The default setting for MessageExpiryDays is 3.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER for the logged on user.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE for all users.

You must have changed another setting with TweakUI. Unfortunately, I have
no idea which setting. Or something coincidental happened.

Did you uncheck any of the users under TweakUI [+] Logon Show "So And So" on
the Welcome screen?

I do not use the Welcome screen, but I do not remember it displaying running
programs. With Fast User Switching it does. I do not use that either.

Is Fast User Switching still enabled?

To enable Fast User Switching:
1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
3. Click Change the way users log on or off.
4. If it is not already selected, click to select the Use the Welcome screen
check box.

NOTE: The Use Fast User Switching check box is unavailable until you click
to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
5. Click to select the Use Fast User Switching check box, and then click
Apply Options. Quit the User Accounts tool.

Hi

As I told before the registry settings are all fine and I did not do
anything with checking usernames. And yes fast user switching is still
enabled (else I would not be seeing the welcome screen but a simple dialog
box (username/password). I tried disabling and then re-enabling the fast user
switching but still the problem remains.

In the worst case I might have to go with a System Restore.

You stated: "checked the registry for permissions but they all look fine"

Registry permissions have nothing to do with it.

Hi

I am sorry I did not make myself more clear. But I checked the registry and
also checked permissions but they all are fine. Is there something else I can
do? If not then I am planning a system restore tonight.
