windows xp keeps on rebooting

On my XP when I ran scandisc it gave me a message saying you should run
chkdsk /F. When I ran it it said it couldn't complete it so if I would want
it to start automatically when the PC starts? so I entered Y. Now whenever I
turn on my PC it says "one of your disk needs to be checked for consitency"
and runs a scan. After it is completed 100% it just reboots and goes through
same cycle, can anybody help me please?

You should be able to abort the scan by hitting "any key" early in the
boot cycle. Beyond that, try this:

I did look and when I press a key the disk checking stops but it still keeps
on rebooting

The link shows what to do if you are using a HP scanjet scanner and I am not
using any scanjet scanner. Plus it reboots even if I abort the chkdsk

Check Disk - Disk Checking Runs Upon Boot

Check Disk runs on every boot: Note - I have seen this happen when Windows
File Protection has either been disabled or not allowed to run upon
canceling the bootup Check Disk.

Suggestions and Checkpoints:

Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: fsutil dirty query c:
(Modify the drive letter accordingly)

If it comes back as dirty, it hasn't cleared. For more information go to
Start/Run/CMD and type in: CHKNTFS /?

Option: From a command prompt type chkntfs /D and then reboot, a chkdsk
should run but not again on next boot.

This edit does not work for all users, circumstances depending:

Disable or Enable CheckDisk Upon Boot (Line 82)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and
answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right
clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Thanks for the info. But I can not even go to cmd prompt because windows
keeps on rebooting and never actually starts. I mentioned about chkdsk was
because this problem started after running chkdisc command from cmd prompt.

Have you tried running chkdsk from the Repair Console? Instructions here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

If it doesn't complete at this level, you may have a bad hard drive (at least,
that was my problem with the same symptoms as yours). I confirmed the bad HD
with a diagnostic tool from my HD mfg -- Western Digital.

Your system has problems indicating that you should be attempting to recover
data before it is irretrievably lost. Stop trying to fix the drive and
start trying to scrape data off it.

If you need that system to work *now*, get another hard disk and install to
that. then return to the previous disk and recover data.
