Windows XP installation problems

Hi,

Recently I tried to "upgrade" windows XP to a new version, XP Pro SP2.
The installation seemed to go just fine, however, when it finally
booted up I was greeted by the same usual splash screen but with no
video--nothing except for the white mouse cursor could be seen (which
I could move). Apparantly everything works fine, except for the fact
that I can't see a darn thing. Starting up in Safe Mode showed the
same, except with the "Safe Mode" in white text printed in the corners
and version at the top.

Sooo, I first attempted to try to 'repair' it from the installation CD,
but that didn't work. I've since installed a new version under a
different root folder (\winxp instead of \windows) and still have all
my data available on the drive--I'm writing from that install now.
Problem is, I want to get back to the old install or at least import my
old settings--stuff like all my MS Office apps won't run, probably
because they installed a load of stuff into the registry under the old
install.

I could just reinstall everything, but that's really quite tedious.
I'd also like to know if there's in general a quick-fix for the
particular problem I've had; if there's some way to copy over my
current video settings to the old install, and get that to work, then I
could just dump this new install and not have to waste hours
reinstalling everything, tweaking the environment to no end, etc.

Any suggestions welcome,

Thanks

FAST would be very useful if I had used that before I started the
initial upgrade, or if I could actually access my current install
without being blind.
