With the thought of upgrading all of my operating
systems,
I purchased Windows XP Professional Edition and installed
it on PC#3 (the Compag Presario 4660)

Problem #1- Windows XP failed to install the Compaq 56kDF
Modem and disabled the device.
(Code 29 error encountered - modem firmware did not give
required resources. The Troubleshooter
says to contact Compaq for a firmware upgrade. Compaq does
not have a Windows XP driver or
firmware upgrade for this modem. Therefore, I cannot
connect to the internet although I could
using Windows Millinium.)

Problem #2- Windows XP failed to establish a network.
(I tried to use the Network and Internet Connection Wizard
with no success even though there
were no error indications along the way. I have used the
Windows Millenium Network and
Internet Connection Wizards successfully many times over
the years.)

Can anyone help me?

Tommy, the problem with your modem is hardware its not
software, Compaq has been having problems keeping up with
driver upgrades for the new systems, and sorry to tell you
this Windows Millenium is one of the major reasons, they
just havent made any new drivers for the XP series and its
not known when they will. My suggestion on that is just
take the bullet and buy a new $20.00 modem. Look for
Windows XP comp. XP will most likely find anything you
put into it.
One thing your lucky that the presario even took windows
XP. Compaq is known for not accepting to many upgrades.

As for the Networking, have you upgraded all the systems
or are you just trying to see if it will still work
without XP on the other systems? I would suggest
upgrading and then working out the kinks in the network
If you have upgraded all of them, it will take a lot of
monkeying around with the settings on all the computers,
unless you are going to make a domain, make sure you add
in the logins of the other computers into the user groups
on all the machines. If you want more information on a
workgroup linkup just let me know.

For XP did you do a clean install, or did you upgrade over the old
system?
