Did My network card fail?

C

Problem Description: This problem began while the
computer was in "standby" for several hours. I have an HP
Pavilion XT967 desktop connected to a NETGEAR four-port
router, and a laptop sometimes connected to the router.
Internet connection is through a cable modem. My first
indication of a problem was a failure to wake from
the "standby" shutdown, followed by a failed internet
connection. I attempted to reset my router and cable
modem and restart the desktop but it showed a bad IP
address when I ran ipconfig. (It showed 169.254.214.170
when it should show 192.168.0.2). I connected the
ethernet cable directly to the cable modem but still had
no connection (no web and no email). I called my ISP tech
support and he eventually diagnosed either a bad driver
for the network adapter or a bad pice of hardware in the
network card. My network adapter is Realtek RTL8139
Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC, so I looked for a new
driver. (First I tried a system restore, but of all the
restore points loaded, NONE worked; I consistently
got "Your computer cannot be restored to:") I found a new
driver at the realtek website and downloaded it and
installed it. This brought no solution but instead added
a problem. Now I also get an error message each time I
start: the box is labeled "Mobile Device Properties" and
says "The TCP/IP network transport is not installed." Of
course, now I can no longer sync my Pocket PC. The driver
I installed is "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet
NIC" version 5.611.1231.2003. One final symptom comes
from Norton Antivirus: I get a failure notice, "Common
Client user session has encountered a problem and needs
to close." BTW: I attempted to roll back the driver for
the network card and although it rolled back to the MS
driver, none of the problems left.
Here are other things I tried: I ran netsh int ip reset
resetlog.txt but it had no effect. I visited
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm and downloaded an LSPfix
utility, but it had no effect.
I would prefer to use system restore, but that is not
working for me. I need to connect to the internet (web
and email) and sync my Pocket PC. That means getting my
desktop to recognize the IP address of the router and
fixing the TCP/IP network transport problem. The cable
modem, roter, and ethernet cables all work. I am using my
laptop with cable connection to the router to write to
you now. Help, please?
Problem Area: Can't connect to the network
Frequency of problem: Always Happens
Operating system / version: Windows XP

I believe this is the same issue as "Windows Update Killed My Network
Connectivity" above. I am having the same problem but on my laptop which is
an HP ZT1170. I have gone through all of the steps you have listed also.

Try this at the command promp

c:\ipconfig /re
then go to
c:\ipconfig /rene
Windows 2000 and xp assign themselves a ip when it dosn't receive one from DHC
the best thing to do is to release this dummy ip once you do that your router should pick up the nic....
Make sure the nic is operating correctly in device manager and you have a link light on the back of the nic
This has helped me with DSL and RR when stuck!
Good luck. i

Thanks, but I tried the release and renew. release did
nothing and renew brought about the infamous "An
operation was attempted on something that is not a
socket." Hmmm... that could be a clue. I think I'll go
check a KB article on that...

More to follow, I'm sure.

Thanks for the suggestion. I uninstalled Norton AV Pro
2004 and everything is still failed - except I no longer
get the common client error, because it's not there
anymore. I still get no IP and the "TCP/IP network
transport" issue is still there.

Any thoughts?

Uninstall Norton and see if it works after that.

Thanks again for your suggestions. I ran lspfix again,
with the same results (lspfix identified no changes and
the problem was unaffected.)

1. I backed up and carefully removed the two registry
keys and rebooted. RESULT: no change

2. I followed your steps 3-7 and after reboot, my problem
was gone. I have an automatically sensed IP address and
I connected to the web and email through my router. My
TCP/IP error message is also gone and I can sync my
PocketPC again.

Thanks very much for your assistance!

Now I will reinstall my Zone Alarm Firewall and Norton AV
Pro 2004. I'll hang onto your message...

Chuck
