while building a new computer and trying to install
windows on the harddrive before putting it into the
computer i was trying to do it over a usb link and it
told me to install windows setup files....now whenever i
boot up the good setup it asks me if i want to run win xp
or install it...how do i remove the install files so it
doesnt ask me anymore

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not correct the issue, then:

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Seems you have two installations of XP on the hard drive. One that was
not completed and the other that was. A clean install is probably your
best bet. Erase the hard drive and re-install windows. Note that this
will erase everything on the hard drive.
