Can't get past GUI install if I move the mouse. System locks up.
Freezes. Flashed BIOS from A06 to A11, no go. Able to install Win 98,
Slackware no problem. Was running WinME before I tried to upgrade to XP.
All internal devices unplugged except PCI video card. Ran memtest on
PC133 128mb stick, no problem. Swapped hard drives, ran XP install again
(Home and Professional) locked up just the same.

I've read elsewhere of Dell Dimension 4100 owners upgrading to XP, but
in this case the only problematic variable is XP... any ideas?

Did you run the Hardware Compatibility Wizard before trying the install?
Never update the BIOS if the system is working nominally, for any reason.
You may have hosed it, bigtime. Your 128 MB of RAM is way low! 512 MB will
be much more comfortable. If you check the system requirements for XP you
will find that 256 MB is the minimum advised. Are you using a legal copy of
XP?

It was the video card. HCW found it. thanks.
