Hello,

I don't know if anyone can help me out here, but I can't get my HOSTS
file to be used by Windows XP Pro (it worked with another comp I had
with XP Pro).

I deleted everything in notepad and left only one line and it still
doesn't work:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>dir %windir%\system32\drivers\etc
Volume in drive C is Sis
Volume Serial Number is B0D6-1FBF

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

04-02-2004 11:53 <DIR> .
04-02-2004 11:53 <DIR> ..
04-02-2004 11:41 21 hosts
04-02-2004 11:28 1.826 hosts.rui
31-03-2003 12:00 3.683 lmhosts.sam

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>type hosts
172.16.13.1 cgd

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>ipconfig /flushdns

Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>ping cgd
Ping request could not find host cgd. Please check the name and try
again.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>ipconfig /displaydns

Windows IP Configuration

cgd

Rui,

suspected virus. There are some recent viruses or worms that
point the computer at a different hosts file to prevent
antivirus updates.

I also hope you're not trying to use hosts.sam, which is only an
ineffective sample file. The active hosts file is named hosts.

Thanks. I hope it's not a virus (my anti-virus doesn't find any).

I managed to get it to work by copying the HOSTS file to the LMHOSTS file.
No when I telnet or ping a name on that file it gets the ip address!
