Hosts file not being used

On my Win XP Pro box, the hosts file (C:|WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)
has stopped being used.

That is to say the entries that I have in there that used to work no longer
do. I can't ping the mapped IP addresses by name.

Any ideas?
