xp hosts file dose nothing at all

where i work i have a xp sp1 machine
that seems to ignore its hosts file

ie a entry in the hosts file that reads
123.123.123.123        servertest

i then ping servertest and get host not found

it is the only hosts file on the pc
and it is in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder

can anyone offer any suggestions

can anyone offer any suggestions

First, dump the HTML; it's annoying. Second, where should the
123.123... point to? Did you set this up and is the IP address correct?
It has to point to a *real* destination.
