windows xp home wont start up

Windows froze recently and I switched it off at the wall.
Since then I have not been able to boot up windows.
I get a page that offers the choice to go into safe mode/
last known good configuration, etc. But when I make a
choice on the next page, no matter what choice, it just
takes me back to the initial page again.

Any suggestions why this might have happened and how to
fix it.

It happened because the PC wasn't closed down properly. If 'Last Known Good Configuration' doesn't work & you can't get into Safe Mode, you will have to look towards a 'Repair' install of XP:
