Windows XP Home won't Restart/Shut Down [links/remedies don't work

First off, let me state that all the usual links and remedies listed in the
previous postings on this subject do not fix the problem. I have read page
after page of possible causes and fixes from here, as well as doing endless
research on the internet, all to no avail. Mine is a unique problem.

I am running Windows XP Home on a Sony VAIO RS420, with SP2. I have McAfee
Anti-Virus, and numerous Spyware/Adware programs that are updated and run at
least bi-weekly, and even run them in SAFE MODE occasionally, to pick up any
renegade stuff. I have even done a complete SYSTEM RECOVERY several times,
with 3 different sources as Recovery DVD's, including ordering them directly
from Sony, so I know that the OPERATING SYSTEM cannot be the problem, because
each time, before I add any programs, the problem exists. I have had this
computer for 1 1/2 years, and never had a problem until now. The BIOS has
been updated as well as all the drivers and firmware after each SYSTEM
RECOVERY. All Windows Updates were done each time as well, and the problem
existed prior to, and after updating.

The actual problem is that when I go to the START menu and choose to TURN
OFF COMPUTER by using RESTART of SHUT DOWN, 95% of the time nothing happens.
Sometimes it will work normally. The interesting thing is that if I choose
to LOG OFF and SWITCH USER, the RESTART or SHUT DOWN will always work.

Based on post readings, I even created a SHORTCUT on the DESKTOP for RESTART
and SHUT DOWN, of which it worked beautilfully twice, then nothing. For each
time the RESTART or SHUT DOWN doesn't work, the DESKTOP will 'blink' once,
the items in the TASK BAR will disappear, and then nothing. The strange
thing is that I can access my computer like normal. Attempting to repeat or
change the RESTART or SHOT DOWN to the opposite mode, results in nothing.

I have replaced the Motherboard, hard drive, and had the power supply
checked out, all to not avail.

I guess ultimately my question is what is the problem? In lieu of a remedy,
the follow-up question is, "Will shutting down my computer with the LOG OFF
method harm the computer? All other functions/applications appear to be
working fine.

I appreciate your time and effort in helping me. I thank you so much.

I am having a very simmaler problem, right down to the fact that it's a
sony VAIO...

I would almost think it was a hardware problem, but you said you
already tried a different Motherboard....

Please, anyone else have any ideas?

The Logoff method shouldn't harm your computer, and is probably safer
than the poweroff at the supply meathod I've been using. (I have an
additional problem in that Logoff will not work for me, so I can't use
that meathod)
