Windows Xp Home upgrade - install doesn't recorgnize my Windows 98

I bought a Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade (with Service Pack 2) to install
on my computer running Windows 98. I bought the computer with Windows 98
installed on it by the manufacturer. It did not come with a Windows 98 CD.
The installation is asking me to insert a Windows 98 CD, I suppose to prove
that I am entitled to the upgrade. I don't have this CD. Why won't it look at
the hard disk to get this information? How do I get around this? I don't want
to spend the additional money for the full, non-upgrade version of XP. I
believe that I am entitled to the upgrade, aren't I?

Is Windows 98 still installed and can you boot into Windows 98?
If so, then you should autorun the XP CD from within Windows 98
and choose to Install and then accept the default setting of Upgrade
(recommended).

If you have already formatted the hard drive and wiped out
Windows 98, then you are going to need some qualifying product
(like Retail copy of Windows 98 or Windows ME) CDROM.

Perhaps you can borrow such a CDROM?

As far as being "entitled" - your beef should be with the
system manufacturer for not providing a Windows 98 CDROM
in the first place.

If you can upgrade to XP by autorunning the CD from within
Windows 98; once XP is installed, you can boot from the CD
and choose to Press Enter for Setup and then Press the F8 key
to accept the license agreement and the Press ESC instead of
R for a Repair Install and then delete the existing C: and create
a New Raw C: and format it with NTFS and then run a clean
install of XP Home.

All data / programs / drivers will be gone if you decide to run
a clean install. If XP does not have drivers for some devices,
you will need to provide updated XP drivers. All programs
would need to be reinstalled and then back-up copies of data
copied back to the new clean install.

I have an IBM computer that contains Aptiva, obviously an older
version. I recently purchased Windows Vista, and thought I may upgrade the
98SE to XP. First attempt I received error notices. I removed XP, and
attempted to update again.

Currently it hangs up, and receive an assortment of Fatal Errors. I
attempted to return to 98 to no avail. I went to the procedure "if you
cannot boot into Windows."
I attempted to boot from Aptiva Recovery CD.
Answered No when asked if I wish to restore the Aptiva software on my hard
disk. If I said yes, it would have removed everything stored which is the
last option to choose.
At the DOS prompt enter C: to get to a C:\> prompt
Enter cd \windows\command
Enter scanreg

Previous experiences it would view backups. Currently, I believe since XP
is particularly installed, recovery by this procedure is not the answer.

I would appreciate any suggestion without cleaning all stored data.
