I am using Windows XP Home SP2 with an AMD Athlon processor.
I have a strange problem that has only come to light over the last few days.
When I switch my pc on, I can only start windows in 'safe mode with
networking' and then restart.

I have tried system restore and chkdsk but to no avail.

The problem puzzles me even further, now that I've noticed I can restart pc
and can even switch off pc for a few minutes and windows will boot up as
soon as I switch on.
But for some reason, when pc is off for en extended period of time, it will
not auto boot when I switch on.

Has anyone got any idea what action I need to take to solve this problem.
I would like to try all possible cures before resorting to reformat.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me that you should be more concerned about starting in safe mode,
then the auto boot.

So which one is your concern?

I just wanted to know if there is anything I can do that will enable my pc
to boot windows up at switch on, like it used to

do you still have problem of "only start windows in safe mode with networking
and then restart"??

What do you mean by "and then restart"??
does it restart on its own or are you restarting?
