I am about to buy windows XP home edition, and I was
wondering if it came with basic Microsoft programs such as
Microsoft Word and Works, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Home
Publishing, and Microsoft Streets and Trips.

All you get is the OS itself. You will be required to purchase those other
program separately.

Greetings --

No. Windows XP Home Edition is an Operating System. As such,
just like *all* previous versions of Windows, it naturally does not
include any applications such as Microsoft Word and Works, Microsoft
Money, Microsoft Home Publishing, or Microsoft Streets and Trips. As
has always been the case, these programs must be purchased and
installed separately.

All you get is the OS. If you want all those other programs, look
for a new machine that has all those programs pre-installed. Some
makers offer special deals on pre-installed software.

My brother in law purchased a Dell desktop that had all the programs
you mentioned plus some others pre-installed.

And he paid lots more than just Windows xp would cost. I got MS Woris as a
preinstall on my system but wanted Office. Had to buy and instal it.
