windows xp home edition is struck at switch user screen

Please help, windows xp home edition is struck at switch user screen it
doesnt list the users and wont go any where from that screen ( screen where
it shows windowsxp logo) .

Started in safe mode and its stuck at that screen.

started in last good configuration , its still stuck at the same screen.

restarted several times and its still suck at the same screen and wont give
me login and wont go anywhere from that screen ever after reapedly clicking
ctrl+alt+del...

Any help appreciated!!

this may sound scilly, but try some more simple things like disc check and
defragmenting, and alos make sure you clean out your temps files on a regular
basis,

how much hard drive space do you have on c:/, i would get over this problem
buy using two hard drives one for the OS and one for file, also try changing
the wiy users log so it stops user switching meaing thet have to log off
first(may not be ideal)

I cannot see any user there , all I see it the windowsxp logo and its just
struck there when starting in safe mode or normal mode or last good
configuration mode.

Its just struck at the windowsxp logo screen.

Also in the safemode with command prompt mode its just frozen at the

SO would it be correct to say you can not log on at all, if so you may have a
problem with windows, so try re-insalling

A repair install should retain installed programs and data, however, with
computers the worst can always happen so that is why the #1 rule is, always
have a full and complete backup of important data. When a problem happens
is not the time to be thinking about backup.

That said here are some options on backup up the data..

1. Take the drive out of the computer and install it as a slave drive in
another Windows XP or 2000 computer. It should read the drive ok, so you can
copy the data.

2. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from that, then copy the data to
external USB drive or flash drive.

3. Download a bootable Linux distro called Knoppix. Create a bootable CD
from that, boot from it, and copy the data to USB drive or flash drive, or
if the computer has two CD drives, one of which is a burner, then use the
k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the data to CD.

4. Take it to a competent computer tech to backup the data.

I recommend you do this before doing a repair install. Here is a link on
