Windows XP has stopped recognizing Panasonic digital camera

PC running XP has previously supported transfer of data from Panasonic
digital camera via wizard. Now there's a recognition sound when the camera
is connected via USB port and switched on, and I can use Windows Explorer to
transfer files from camera to PC, but the wizard doesn't open.
Start>Control Panel>Scanners & Cameras doesn't show an icon for the camera.
Panasonic isn't among the cameras listed in the Add Device window.
Selecting Have CD and inserting the manufacturer's disc doesn't help;
apparently it contains no information about the device. XP won't let me
install the driver from the CD.
I restored the system to before the fault developed, with no effect.
Any ideas about where to go next, anyone?
Hope this is the right group for the question.

Paddy,
What is the model number of the camera? Some camera models support
PictBridge transfer mode. If your camera does, you may want to select that
option in the camera settings menu and try connecting to your PC again.

Thanks,
Radu

Thanks for the message. It's a DMC-FZ20, and it's got to go back to
Panasonic for repair, as the menu button has stopped working. Actually I'm
wondering if they messed with settings when it was being mended the last time
- we've only just had it back. When we get it back again I'll check the
transfer settings, as it does support PictBridge.
Thanks again
Paddy
