Windows XP has stopped booting up after Disk Check

I've no idea what happened here. I re-started my PC, and the "check disk for
errors" screen came up. Only it was olive green!

I let it do its thing, and it referenced having to fix a temporary file - I
didn't take too much notice...

It then crashed and wouldn't continue to load windows. So I physically
turned off the screen and tried again. Now it no longer tries to do a disk
check, but after the Windows XP logo and little blue bar, it just turns the
screen black.

the screen does not claim its not getting a signal, so I tried to boot into
safe mode. That works, but is obviously useless.

I have tried doing a system restore, and I have tried to re-install my
display drivers. That allowed me to boot into VGAmode, but as I had no
network connections it was also useless. I used VGA mode to set the screen up
with the drivers t the correct resolution and restarted....

Now even VGA mode does not work. I am at a total loss of what could be wrong
- I've had this machine for 18months without a single problem until now!

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm getting desperate!

TIA

Hi,

Boot to the Recovery Console, run chkdsk C: /r from the prompt.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307654

If you don't have a regular WinXP CD, you can do this using the boot floppy
set.

Using the WinXP Boot floppy set:

Elsewise, you may need to download and run a drive diagnostic tool from the
manufacturer and test the drive. It may have failed.

Alas, I have tried this and despite this time saying that Windows has found
now problems, it still stops loading after the 4th little dot (out of eight).

It has been suggested my hard drive is failing... :(

That doesn't sound quite like a hard disk failure. It could be a bad
sector on the hard disk or device driver that does not load in safe
mode.

Not sure whether it can be run in Safe Mode but try HD Tune
(freeware). Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on C:\ under Drive letter
and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Also do a full surface scan with HD Tune.

I suggest whilst in Safe Mode you look at Warning and Error Reports
in the System and Application logs of Event Viewer at the time the
chkdsk problems occurred and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
