Windows XP hangs during Switch User and Logging Off

Hi,
I have Win XP (Home Edition) on my PC at home and it hangs
with the display "Saving Your Settings" when I try to
switch user or Log Off. The PC becomes totally
unresponsive - so much so that even the On/Off button will
not work. I have to resort to turning the power off at the
back of the box.
This problem doesn't happen all of the time, but it is
quite common. Anybody experienced something similar ? If
so - how did you cure it ?
