XP Home shutdown hangs

At the office all of our computers running XP home hang on shutdown.
They stay on the "logging off" screen and never shut down until the
power button is held down. We have similar computers running windows
98SE with the exact same software and networking installed and they
don't have any problems shutting down. Any ideas of what would make the
XP machines hang every time?

Hi Travis,

As it's all of them, then obviously it is some office software that is
common to all of them. So, look at what's installed - is it all XP
compatible? Basically, the way to isolate it is to work with one system and
manually shut down running applications and processes (Task Manager), trying
to shut down between each, until you get it to work. I would start by
shutting down your AV product, as they often cause these hangs.

Thanks Rick,
I figured out that it is a program called Tiny Term Emulator. I can't
find a running process for it so I uninstalled it and the system shut
down; as soon as I reinstalled it, my shutdown problem returned. It's
an older version that we use for hours every day to connect to an AIX
server for the majority of our paperwork, bill paying, etc. So it can't
be removed or upgraded to a XP compatible version. Is there any way to
make the computer shut down with this still installed?

Hi,

Possibly your network folks could script a short terminating program and add
it to the logoff scripts.
