Windows XP Exclamation Sound

I have XP Pro and after upgrading to broadband from dial-
up the exclamation sound plays constantly. I have
checked, removed and re-installed my virus protection and
firewall with no effect.

I have also switched the sound themes to nothing and the
sound still plays.

Any suggestions on how to track down what is causing the
sound to play?

The sound is associated with certain events.
What events are causing the sound? Once you know
that you can probably turn it off in control panel/
sounds and audio devices/sounds.

Have you tried going into Control Panel/Sounds and Audio
Devices/Sounds/Sound scheme? You might be able to fix
your problem that way.

Do you know what programs are running when it plays? Have you looked
in Event Viewer (Settings - Control Panel - Administrative Tools) to
see if any error messages are being logged when it plays?

Has anyone found a solution to this??? I have read several posts in
several discussion groups with no solution. How can so many have this
problem and no solution be available........ Please make it
stop.......

I too have looked at every possible viewer, tracker, log, sound files,
etc. and can not find what is the trigger.

Help if you can.

every one here would actually want to know a little more than is mentioned
regarding the problem. like when do you hear this sound play. did this start
happening only after switching to you broadband? you said that plenty of
people have faced this problem. do these people use the same dsl/adsl modem
or other hardware software that you use?

Really well put. This explains a lot. OK. As i see it there is no problem at
all. By your description of the problem one thing is clear that the sound is
being produced by an application that uses internet. Do you have any
messengers installed on your system?? If you do then the next time you start
your system do not start any of them and then see if the problem occurs.

Hope this helps

1. We have had broadband for a long time with this computer and only i
the last 3+ months has this happened.
2. The sound will play randomly whenever the computer is on. It doe
not seem to happen when all users are logged off......I think.
3. It apperas to be related to connection with the internet. It doe
not happen when the modem is disconnected.
4. I was making modifications to my home network when this began 3
months ago. I remember "checking off" a box that said "Notify m
when......." Since then the "exclemation sound" has driven us crazy.
I have traced back my steps so many times I am now confused as to wha
I have done. I can not fine that "check off" box anywhere.....
5. "several people"..... Only in posts on other pages and discussion
have I seen others with the same problem. All advice has been to loo
at all tasks, viewers, logs, etc. There is nothing being logged o
that is viewable to my knowledge in any of the programs.

Hope this clears it up a little so I can find a remedy
