Windows XP does not recognize Modem

I use dial-up. On my other computer, when I attempt to use the modem, I get
an error reading "Microsoft Windows does not have any modems listed for this
computer." My service will allow me to check email but not surf the web. I
have uninstalled my modem and it re-installed upon start up. I get no
"yellow trianangles" and when I query, my modem responds. I have installed
other dialup software to access my modem and I get the same error. Device
manager also lists my modem. Any ideas?

Thanks for the ideas - I do not use AOL (I ditched that years ago :) ) nor do
I have an HP. My CPU was "custom" and I have since moved from that area.
Any other ideas???
