Windows XP Desktop

I have a new toolbar on the left side of my desktop which has displaced the
desktop to the right. It just "appeared" one day when I started my computer.
The toolbar is context dependent, changing depending on which desktop icon
is selected. The toolbar has three menu options: One (Folder Tasks) for
desktop folders, which allows adding or deleting (or manipulating) desktop
folders; another one (Other Places) just provides another shortcut to My
Documents and My Network Places; and the third (Details) just shows a pop-up
type list of information about whichever desktop icon is selected or
whichever application file is open.

Where did this toolbar come from, and how do I get rid of it ? There is no
way to select the toolbar with either a left or right mouse click, and there
are no options to minimize or close or move to another location.
