I have a Dell computer at work which had Windows XP Home
Edition on it. I still have the original disk that came
with the new computer. I bought a Windows XP Pro disk,
which I wanted to put on my Windows 98 computer at home.
However, my friend installed Pro on the wrong computer
and activated it (the Dell at work with XP Home). Is
there a way to correct this mistake, so I can install the
valid XP Pro on my home computer that still has 98, and
have the XP Home Edition back on the Dell at work?

Just re-install it, if you have to call explain it's been removed , as if
they know......lol If it's been over 120 days they have no record of it.

The above advice, posted by "Mr. Willit", is incorrect,
fraudulent and should not be followed.

You'll need to reformat the drive of the Dell computer,
thus removing XP Pro, then reinstall XP Home on it.

Clean Install Windows XP

Then you can upgrade your Windows 98 computer
using the XP Pro upgrade CD. If Product Activation
via the internet should fail, then select the option to
"activate by telephone"

Assuming that this is a retail version of XP Professional,
there's no problem doing that. Once you remove it from the wrong
machoine, you can install it on the other and reactivate it. When
you activate it, activation over the inetrnet will fail and
you'll be given an 800 number to call; just explain that you've
taken it off the old computer and put it on the new one--it's
quick and easy.

and

This is your only problem. There is no way to downgrade back to
XP Home. You'll have to do a clean installation.

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Use the Dell disk to put that machine back as it was. Then install
your new CD on the other machine. When it comes to activation, before
30 days are up, you will have to run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows,
take the option to activate by phone, and phone a toll-free number that
will be given, to explain and swap one long number for another to check
back as you type it in
