Windows XP crashes when I run Defragmenter

Shortly after starting defragmenter, Windows XP crashes.Happens even after returning machine to manufacturer's settings
Only non manufacturer software on machine is spybot which I had run to remove threats and immunise sysytem
Happens when Norton System Works and no NIS ids installed, and also if NIS/NAV is installed
Anyone any idea how to fix?

Your last statement is most revealing. The Symantec tech support people are
not entirely unapproachable, are they?

Perhaps you would care to re-read my statement carefully Bee, and explain the analysis behind your smart-arse and unhelpful remark. I spent some time pursuing the problem before asking asistance from peers who might be better acquainted with the XP defragmenter. The Norton statement was added to help eliminate possibilities, not to suggest a cause. My credentials are 40 years in computing from the time we wrote in machine code and there was no software let alone operating systems. What are yours?

This is a duplicate of my reply sent at about 13:30 GMT today. Hope this
one get through.

I re-read your original message. My comment still stands. Sorry you are
ruffled by it.

Hey, this is not a gladiatorial contest. If I said I had 41 years in
computing, would that make you feel better?

Bee.
