i have an XP problem i can start my computer fine but after a varible period
of time the computer will crash. this is with or without any input from me.
so i am stumped. i have re-installed the softwear. and it solved it but after
removing a login account. it has begun again. it is an unpredicable problem.
is this a common problem can it be patched. i know about the existance of a
prog that is in xp and can be run like msconfig that can fix windows or patch
the software form the disc. i have used it before but have forgotten the prog
name.
Norton antivirus 2005 current and up to date and the problem was present
before i installed this and then after i re-installed XP.

i can only think it could be a driver issue.
or a system error

Was there a time when your system worked OK? If so, you can restore the
system to this point. Run/Help & Support/Pick a task.

i have tried system restore but to no avail i even tried reverting back
several months to make damn sure i was in good restore points

The random nature of the error points to failing hardware as the
probable cause. Here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps:

1) Open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing). Obviously
you can't do this with a laptop, but you can hear if the fan is running
and feel if the laptop is getting too hot.

2) Test the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test
run for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately.

3) Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from the mftr.

4) The power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for the devices
you have in the system - this isn't applicable to a laptop, of course.

5) Test the motherboard with something like TuffTest from
www.tufftest.com.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a good local
computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).

Spyware, trojans, or other malware.

See if the CPU cooling fan is working......check for an accumulation of dust
and lint.
Overheating will cause the symptom you describe
