I've been using McAfee VirusScan for 3 years, and of course Windows XP Home
Edition.
Everything's been fine up until a week ago. Now my VirusScan won't stay
enabled. I've run a virus check and only came up with no viruses and two PUPs
for programs I already know about: PeoplePC toolbar and a GameSpy Arcade
component. I went ahead and quarantened them.
It's still doing it. In particular, right when I startup Windows, McAfee
loads and enables, then the computer freezes briefly before VirusScan is
suddenly disabled and the icon goes dark. I try to enable and it stays that
way for a moment before reverting again. Sometimes on a third or fourth try,
VirusScan will stay enabled.
I also notice the problem as I shut down. First, it takes a good 30-40
seconds before the shutdown options appear and when they do, VirusScan has
been disabled. Once it's disabled, the shutdown options appear quickly.
This is very frustrating and feels like my computer is infected with a
virus, although McAfee can't find any. I never download programs from the web
-- mainly just Windows and McAfee updates -- and am not often on the web,
although my computer is wireless.
HELLLLP!!!!
