Windows XP - Chkdsk appears to be stalled?

I was trying to get on the internet last night via road runner.
It was taking a long time to get on, so I shut down and restarted the
computer.
On start up the computer recommend I run Chkdsk.
The first time I ignored it. Windows loaded and I still could not get on
internet.
Connected my laptop to the same hub and got onto the internet just fine.
Turn off desktop again. Now chkdsk starts by itself.
"File record segment xxxxx is unreadable" starts showing up line after line
Now it has sat at "file record segment 122187 is unreadable" for an hour
with no movement.
How much trouble am I in?
I read about the status report that chkdsk gives as it goes through its
three different part.
I can't tell if I am locked up or just cranking away.
Anyone with first hand experience or an idea?

Patiently waiting for movement.

Hi,

If it's still stalled and there is no sign of disk activity, then reset the
system and rerun chkdsk.
