A friend of mine has a unmountble_boot_device error(0x000000ED). She hasn't
got windows CD, only a recovery disk. Can I use the XP CD from my medion
Laptop to access the recovery console on her PC, and fix her problem?

As long as all you do is install the Recovery Console that should work.
First make sure you and her have the same, Home or Professional.

You can also install the Recovery Console with these floppies:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994
Be sure to get the correct download.

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at both
ends.
Laptop/Portables:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download
their hard drive diagnostics.
Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay software
which is not needed anyway.

Hi,

Yes, you should be able to use the Recovery Console from your disk. I would
suggest running chkdsk c: /r from the prompt.
