After a power failure during initial boot, my Windows XP
Home Edition upgrade (upgraded from Windows ME about 12
months ago) now boots up to Windows ME. I can't figure
out how this happened. I didn't install a dual boot or
dual partitions to run both XP and ME, although the file
system remains FAT32. All programs seem to be installed
and functional, although the ME bootup required
installation of various ME drivers.

Did this happen as a result of corruption of Windows XP?
How do I revert/repair/reinstall Windows XP? Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Another thought occurs to me. This may be an OEM machine with a
separate copy of the (ME) system installed in a separate partition for
recovery purposes. In which case something may have set that, rather
than the XP one as Active. Try a boot of the ME startup floppy and use
FDISK to inspect the drive. If there *are* in fact two partitions, use
its 'Set active' to swap over to the one where XP is (almost certainly
substantially larger)
