Windows XP behaving erratically

My system is quite old an Intel Celeron 666hz 256 megs RAM and just recently
when online it starts flicking between my Program manage and Display
refresh..eventually shutting down my Broadband connection...would appreciate
it if anyone can tell me why this is happening

do you use antivirus & antispyware ??? if not have a scan:

Yes I do both regularly - in fact I even ran the free Microsoft scan
yesterday as well and nothing unusual came up..??
