Windows XP became really slow

Windows XP SP1.
At first I noticed that computer was a somewhat slow.
I defragmented the C:\ drive.
Now it became 100 times slower, it takes 20 mins to boot
etc.
Are there any issues with XP and defragmentation of drives?
I heard from someone else that happened to them too.
Please help. What can I do at this point?

We have a new Optiplex computer here in our office with
XP Pro and the same thing is happening...the Dell Techs
have had us do various diagnostics all to no avail.
Where do we get the fix for this problem?
